Texas High School Baseball
Some people say that it takes every one to have one. And it’s always been true to baseball. A baseball team will never become successful if the coach and the team players will not come together. A final tournament will never come out hugely successful if not for all the fans who join with the players and cheers for them who are inside the diamond.
Thanks to organizations like the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) whose members came together to provide college students the avenue to showcase their baseball athletic skills by supporting and giving scholarships. In Texas, a group of high school baseball coaches joined hands to uplift the spirit of sportsmanship in the state which resulted to the creation of the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association or the THSBCA.
It was in the year 1972, an assembly of vigorous and able Texas high school baseball scouts and coaches gathered to organize ways and means to improve and promote high school baseball. Brilliant ideas that produce worthwhile activities in Texas ended up with the formation of the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association. From noble ideas of a few high school baseball men in the 70s, the association has now grown to a huge organization, consisting of members from all baseball league divisions. The Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association is considered one of the rapidly growing baseball organizations in the United States.
The simple principles and objectives that served as the association’s foundation are still carried out today. The group is hands on in upholding the spirit of sportsmanship and spreading the awareness of new updates. The Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association attends to the needs of teams, schools, coaches, players on various concerns such as changes of rules, current issues, umpire-coach relationships, recognitions and awards, scholarships and other programs.
The Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association has been the supporter of many scholars in its 36 years of existence. Some of the high schools that have received scholarship grants recently from the Association are the following: Sealy High School, Channelview High School, Bryan High School, Sweeny High School, Humble High School, Lake Travis High School, Tyler Lee High School, Falfurrias High School, Silsbee High School and the Brenham High School.
Through the able leadership of the Association, the THSBCA have really come a long way. Jim Long, from the Brenham High School, currently spearheads the association as the President. He is joined by his colleagues in the sports coaching industry, David Sitton from Humble High School as President Elect, Mario Barett from Spring Westfield High School as Vice President of Membership, Rex Sanders from College Station as Executive Director, Dale Westmoreland from Magnolia High School as Public Relations Secretary, Tom Collins from Round Rock Stony Point High School as UIL Representative, Harris Francis from Bryan High School as Lone Star Classic Director, Scott Mitchell from Hallsville High School as All State Chairman and Tom Gladney from Waco-Midway High School as Texas High School Baseball Historian.
Texas high school baseball rankings are the most talked about in the state. The recent results from the 2007 spring high school baseball poll were full of twists and surprises. The Texas 5A Division for instance, had Katy as the No. 1 with a score of 32-3. Texas 4A Division has Corpus Christ Moody at the No. 1 spot with 33-3. Meanwhile, Carthage swept Texas 3A at No. 1 with 27-0. Texas 2A’s No.1 is Rogers with 28-2. And the number 1 in Texas 1A is Shiner with 23-2.
Organizations like the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association are a very big help not only to the sporting industry but to education in general. The Association keeps students in school while enjoying the benefits of being a high school baseball player, proof that in coming together, common goals are achieved.
