Steroids In Baseball
A common thread almost sports, if not all, have is definitely the controversy concerning steroids. This is something that no sport can ever do without, considering that sports do demand a lot of physical work from their players. And the same goes for baseball as well. Yes, there have indeed been a lot of rumors about steroids in baseball.
So, what are some of these rumors about steroids in baseball? Are these rumors true? There is indeed some truth to the rumors about steroids and baseball. Or so experts claim. But for what it’s worth, these talks about baseball and steroids actually come from the fact that there has been a surge of improvement coming from today’s professional baseball players in the MLB. It is just too much of a surge that a lot of experts are saying that this improvement is actually related to the effects of steroids in baseball.
But what does a steroid actually do? And what exactly are the effects of steroid use in baseball? First off, a steroid is actually a synthetic version, or a man-made version, of the hormone testosterone. This hormone is present in males, and it actually promotes muscle growth and development. When there is steroid usage in baseball, the player is believed to have a significant increase in muscle mass. There is also a significant decrease in body fat, and an increase in endurance as well. Thus, if a baseball player takes steroids, he will most likely be able to hit the baseball further. And this is one major effect baseball players would want to have, should they take steroids.
Now, why should steroids be banned when these effects are actually positive in the game of baseball? For starters, the player is no longer exhibiting his natural abilities and skills. He is already using something that can enhance his capabilities, and this is understandably considered cheating. Aside from that, there is that inevitable risk of side effects. Yes, steroids do have side effects. And this is something that a baseball player cannot do without. Have you ever heard of the term roid rage? This term actually stems from the phrase steroid rage. A lot of side effects can come from taking steroids. One of these is violence. Another is aggression. Mix them both, and any baseball player would become very capable of rage during a game. This is a very unhealthy balance, and can cause much damage to the game, as well as to the fellow baseball players and innocent viewers. Sure, not all baseball players would become aggressive and violent when they take steroids. This is because side effects can differ from one player to another. But the other side effects are not healthy either. Mood swings, for starters, are another example of a steroid side effect. Anyone can be moody without the presence of any drug in their blood system. But when you add steroids to the mix, mood swings can definitely elevate, making a baseball player intolerable to play with.
Another side effect, which is quite common, is depression. Yes, a number of baseball players have indeed admitted becoming depressive after taking steroids for some time. And depression constitutes a very unhealthy state of mind, you know. When untreated, depression can lead to suicidal tendencies. It is only a question of when, and you will certainly become a ticking psychological time bomb.
These are just some of the reasons why steroid usage in baseball has been banned over the years. And if these reasons are not more than enough to ban the usage, then steroids should not be banned at all. Being professional baseball players entails a lot of responsibility, you know. Thus, all professional players should be responsible enough to control themselves and stay away from steroids.
