Minnesota Twins
Prior to being recognized as the Minnesota Twins, it was called either the Senators or the Nationals that represented Washington. The team though is not alone in having double names. There is the Yankees or Highlanders of New York and Dodgers or Robins of Brooklyn. A lot of individuals considered the uniqueness of the long identity. However from 1901 through 1904, the franchise was officially called as the Senators in the National League. Later on, Harry Rapley, Thomas Noyes and Benjamin Minor along with others, purchased the Twins in 1905. They then employed Jake Stahl as manager.
Prior to the 1905 season, former president of the Minnesota Twins, Thomas Noyes, asked the help of spectators and journalists to suggest a new name for the team. He was determined to change the identity of the franchise because of his plans to attract greater market. With that, he finally decided to employ Nationals than sticking with the previous Senators. The moniker actually dated back to 1870 which have been utilized by a lot of clubs based in Washington. In 1906, the Twins’ uniforms already had the novel label written on their jerseys. The group was actually the first to do such.
According to the former president of Minnesota Twins, Thomas Noyes, the owners of the team desired to break away from the conventional and hopefully, embark on something new that will lead to positive progress. With that, they decided to change the bid farewell to the previous name of the franchise, Senators, in the pursuit to become popular in the baseball industry. However, even with the announcement to start employing Nationals, a lot of newspapers still wrote articles that utilized either of the two. Even sports expert use the identities interchangeably. Good thing the franchise was not wholly affected with the trend.
Back in 1905, the Minnesota Twins drafted Larry Shlafly who held the position as second baseman. With his participation, the team was triumphant with its games. The rookie performed admirably that he was rated by Total Baseball as one of the exceptional athletes in the American League (AL). By 1907, the franchise employed the service of Joe Cantillon, owner of Minneapolis Millers, to substitute the managerial spot of Jack Stahl. With the new leadership, the Twins waited for more than a decade before they experienced a winning record. When Walter Johnson joined the club, it was a three hundred sixty degree turn.
Joe Cantillon was then replaced by Clark Griffith where he led the Minnesota Twins to second place in the end of the 1912 season. The team only trailed a matchstick behind the Boston Red Sox who was the champions that year. On that same period, the former president of the franchise, Thomas Noyes, passed away because of pnuemonia. He was replaced with his old colleague, Benjamin Minor who was a notable lawyer in Washington. Since he was active in practicing law, he was not able to fully devote his time in looking over the Twins. With that, he was pushed to sell the club.
The existing manager, Clark Griffith, was very much interested with the Minnesota Twins so he, together with entrepreneur William Richardson, purchased the team. By 1956, he decided to again change the name of the franchise. However, he only revived the Senators but still, a lot still employed the Nationals. In 1961, the designation was official and there were plans of expansion. At that perido, the Twins boasted their strong line- up which included the legendary Walter Johnson. He was instrumental in leading the club to a championship title in the 1924 World Series.
