Florida Marlins

In only ten years prior to its inclusion to major tournaments, the Florida Marlins was fortunate enough to have played especially in the period where “wild card” was introduced. With that, the team was able to play in the World Series where in 1997 and 2003, the franchise took home the crown. The best seasons of the Marlins were under the leadership of Jack McKeon who properly guided his men in winning three straight years. Amidst of the seasons that the club experienced consecutive victories, it suffered from poor attendance. Because of which, the group saw the construction of a new stadium as the solution.

The management of the Florida Marlins was seeking for a stadium that will only be appropriate for baseball. Since the building of the arena was not probable that period, the team threatened to transfer to another metropolis. The government of San Antonio, Texas was vocal about accepting the change of address of the franchise. However, the city that the Marlins are representing was not in favor of the plan. Eventually, the club did not move out. One reason of the decline was that the group did not beat the deadline given by the area to financially support the assembly of a new venue. The possibility of going to another location is still open though.

Florida Marlins was established on the tenth of June 1991. The National League (NL) gave the team to Blockbuster Entertaiment Corporation’s chief executive Wayne Huizenga for an expansion fee of ninety- five million dollars. Immediately, he announced plans of renovating the old Joe Robbie Stadium which today is recognized as the Dolphin Stadium, home of a Miami football franchise. The expenses only amounted to one hundred million dollars because the field was already wide enough to be appropriate in playing baseball. Critics then said that the situation may be similar to Toronto’s Exhibition Stadium.

However, Wayne Huizenga decided to lessen the seating capacity to forty- three thousand as compared to the original target of sixty- seven thousand. This he intended because of his plan to have a more “intimate atmosphere” when spectators witness live the Florida Marlins playing on the diamond. Also, a lot of bleachers in the upper deck were at a far distance from the field if the initial number will be pushed through. Even after the renovation, the stadium’s accommodation has been reduced. At this juncture, the arena can only cater to thirty- six thousand five hundred individuals when it was again repaired in 1994.

Back in the inaugural year of the Florida Marlins, Fredi Gonzalez was appointed as manager on November 1991. By 1992, the team picked University of Miami’s Charles Johnson who played the position as catcher. Later on, the franchise experienced mourning through the untimely demise of the Carl Barger, the president of the Franchise. In one of the meetings of the Marlins, he suddenly collapsed. When he was rushed to the hospital, it was then found out that he suffered from an addominal aortic aneursym. Even with Barger’s death, the club continued on until star athlete Joe Dimaggio joined in.

After the administration of Fredi Gonzalez, he was proceeded by Rene Lachemann. Before he entered the Florida Marlins, he was connected with the Milwaukee Brewers and Seattle Mariners. At the year he was hired by the team, he was coaching the Oakland Athletics who also played as third baseman all at the same time. In 1992, the franchise won over the Houston Astros with a score of twelve is to eight. Jeff Conine made the first home run of the Marlins which was witnessed before an audience of six thousand six hundred ninety- six. The game was held in Cocoa Expo Sports Complex.

Today, the Florida Marlins is continually making noise in the Major League Baseball (MLB). For fans, you can catch Florida Marlins apparel and Florida Marlins collectibles in the team’s official website.
