Colorado Rockies

With Coors Field as its home stadium, the Colorado Rockies was finally established in the 1990’s. However, attempts of creating a team in the state of Colorado can be traced back in the 1880’s. Through the efforts of a banking executive, Larry Varnell, who a led a group assigned by the region’s Baseball Commission, he was able to obtain positive feedbacks of increasing the sales tax in order to finance the construction of a new arena. Aside from the unit headed by Varnell, the office also appointed an advisory committee to scout for an investor. It was under the direction of beverage distributor John Antonucci and drugstore exexcutive Michael Monus. They were supported by companies such as KOA Radio and Erie Lake, among the others.

By the fifth of July 1991, the National League (NL) was determined to establish a new team in Miami, Florida and Denver, Colorado. The organization was actually moving to expand especially in the entry of the 1993 season. In the year targeted by NL, the Florida Marlins and Colorado Rockies were created. In the franchise’s inaugural draft, it picked David Nied who was a former pitcher of the Atlanta Braves. He played for four seasons with the Rockies where later on, Eric Young joined in. Playing the position of a batter, his years with the club were memorable as he was responsible for the group’s first home run.

Colorado Rockies had its first game on the fifth of April 1993. The team was up against the New York Mets but it lost with a score of three is to zero. The inaugural play of the franchise was held in Shea Stadium but it was in Mile High Stadium that the home match took place. The Rockies defeated Canada’s Montreal Expos with eleven is to four. The competition was witnessed by more than eighty thousand spectators where up to this juncture, remains an unbeatable record in Major League Baseball (MLB). The said fight was also the initial victory in the not- so- long history of the group.

Similar to the experiences of a lot of teams that have been established out of expansion plans, the Colorado Rockies struggled in its inaugural year. During a certain event in May, the team only bagged two out of seventeen. The franchise was not able to win any games not until September where it advanced to a record of seventeen is to nine. That continued at the end of the season with a total of sixty- seven victories despite the fact that the Rockies had a slow start. Also, amidst the losses of the club, it had a home attendance of a staggering four million four hundred eighty- three thousand three hundred fifty in its first season.

The strong line- up of the Colorado Rockies was one of the reasons of its success. On the first base, it was guarded by Andres Galarraga who was given the batting title preceding his accomplishment of .370. Through the proper guidance of manager Don Baylor, he modified his stance to an open one because he normally boxed in the pitchers squarely. With that Gallaraga was now able to clearly see incoming strikes. By 1994, the team was once again faced the Montreal Expos with a score of six is to five. With the triumph, it was the first winning record of the franchise that still left the Rockies in last place of the National League (NL).

Today, the team has not yet championship titles in the World Series but is very much making noise in the Major League Baseball (MLB). Fans catch Colorado Rockies tickets and Colorado Rockies schedule in the franchise’s website.
