Boston Red Sox
With home games played in Fenway Park, a stadium regarded as one of the oldest still employed, Boston Red Sox is among the members of the Eastern Division of the American League (AL). In 1903, the team coveted its first title in the World Series. At that period, the franchise was still called the Boston Americans where they defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates. Over a century after, the Red Sox once again created a mark in the World Series as they were hailed as champions in 2004. At this juncture, the club is presently holding the first place position in the Eastern Division of the American League.
The Boston Red Sox is regarded as one of the most celebrated teams in the world of baseball. Every instance there is a scheduled game between the New York Yankees, a lot of spectators would not hesitate to grab a ticket and watch the match live. The two teams have been recognized to be “great rivals” since the past. Over the years, the franchise has gained a lot of fans all over the United States. They are considered as “traveling enthusiasts” because they would be transferring from one stadium to another whenever the Red Sox has a competition. However, the club is only second to the Yankees.
Prior to the popularity of the Boston Red Sox, it went through rocky stages that can be traced back to the 1900. In that year, the Major League Baseball (MLB) was not yet established so the American League (AL) and the National League (NL) were still regarded as separate organizations. The team was a member of the Western League (WL), the old name of AL before it disbanded from NL, was headed by a certain Ban Johnson. At that period, baseball was still held on the streets but later on moved to stadiums where the game should be appropriately played. Huntington Avenue Grounds was one of the first constructed.
Huntington Avenue Grounds was actually the first before the Boston Red Sox moved to Fenway Park. The said stadium witnessed the team’s effort to be in the second place and third place prior to coveting its first title in the World Series. At that year, the franchise had a solid line- up with Cy Young as pitcher and Jimmy Collins as third baseman. For three consecutive seasons, the Red Sox performed admirably. Other athletes of the club that contributed to the success were Patsy Dougherty, Chick Stahl and Buck Freeman who are now regarded as legends in the world of baseball. With all them on field, they defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates.
In 1904, the year after Boston Red Sox coveted its first title in the World Series, it was not entirely a favorable for them. The reason was due to the strong skills of the New York Yankees. Because of which, the team was placed in a tight situation but a lot of fans were looking forward to their games. That, ladies and gentlemen is the start of the “great rivalry” between the franchise and the Yankees. More enthusiasts were even more thrilled when Patsy Dougherty was transferred to the “opponent” in exchange of Bob Unglaub. The trade though did not put an end to the contention because incidents that followed heightened the situation.
The climax was said to be in the doubleheader game between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees. It was held in Hilltop Park where the Yankees were placed in tough pressure. For them to win, they have to defeat the Red Sox in two matches. At that period, star- athlete Jack Chesbro was still with the New York team so a lot of fans thought they could win. When it was his turn to strike the pitch with Lou Criger on the third base waiting to make a home run, Chesbro was able to succeed and the rest as they say, is history.
